Getting “Schooled” at Triangle Institute

As a photographer, one of my favorite things to do  ( Other than getting new equipment ) is to learn new techniques and be around other cool photographers! Plus- if you do it right; it can help your business by getting you excited to try and “push” your comfort zone a little bit….One of the best ways to do this is to attend professional photography schools- I’m talking about the weeklong kind here- because you get “real world” experience from your teachers and peers who do business day in and day out in the photography field.

I teach at workshops and seminars throughout the year, so for me to decide to take off the time and invest it back into myself with some “higher learning” means it has to be meaningful and has to pay for itself over the course of doing business!

I’ve found all of this and a great deal more by attending the Triangle Institute of Photography, which was founded back in 1967 and is affiliated with the Professional Photographers of America.

I’ll be attending the “Fine Art”  classes this season ( It starts on March 30th this year) My last time there I studied commercial photography and was grateful for the business knowledge that allowed me to keep more of my “bottom line” and got wonderful lessons in technique and lighting skills. ( Won a Fujifilm Masterpeice award for some of my commercial work soon after)

My point of bringing all this up is; I get a lot of people asking me “how can I become a better photographer?” or “  What do I need in order to turn my photography into a business?”

Folks- I’m telling you now- continued education- If you believe this is what you want to do with your life ( photography) go  find a school near you and GO! ( near being relative- Triangle is held in Pittsburgh- about 4-4 1/2 hours away from me)  Find the class that will help you the most ( photoshop, portrait, seniors, commercial, fineart, marketing, etc… ) and GO!

Remeber, nothing will ever be “given” to you and success is never a “sure thing” ; but being prepared will allow you to hear the knock by opportunity at the door if you are prepared and know what to listen for…

  1. Hey, C!
You probably don’t know who I am, but I went to high school with you! (Here’s a hint — my Mom was your 11th grade English Teacher.)

I am so glad to have found your website! You have some awesome photos, and you’re giving me a lot of inspiration! It’s funny you should write this because I am trying to get into grad school at Savannah College of Art and Design for photography. I wish I could be a professional student and just go to school forever — my students here at Catholic probably think I’m nuts for saying that, though! :)

Good going! Keep blogging — I love it!
