I was fortunate enough to have gotten the assignment to photograph Sentator Robert C Byrd during his last inauguration.
He was a gracious man, and quick to smile- he was kind to me and accomodating when I asked him to do this or that for a photograph- mostly I just let him be himself and he sensed my respect for his time and was generous with it; Thats what I’ll remember about him. Not his powerful postition; but him as the man he was.
One of my favorite things about being there that night, was him celebrating his election returns by singing with a bluegrass band for the constituants that had gathered to congratulate him in his suite.
I think what surprised me the most about that was not his love of music; which he was an acomplished fiddle player and well known for as well, but his voice was strong and young.
I guess when we do our lifes work and enjoy that purpose, it transforms us; no matter what the age.
Senator…..Mr. Byrd- thank you for teaching me that lesson and I thank you for your time.
You will be missed.
